So what did you do on your Memorial Day Weekend? Did you compete against 18,000 middle school girls from seven countries around the world? Sutton Middle School did, and returned with something to brag about. Girls from Sutton finished fifth out of 62 teams in the international Odyssey of the Mind competition held last weekend on the campus of Michigan State University. The students were recognized in the closing ceremony as one of the top six teams in the world in their “problem.” Most teams that placed above Sutton had been to world finals several times, so to place fifth on their first time out was a major accomplishment.
The school’s accomplishment is just another indication of the success of its participation in the International Baccalaurate program that promotes greater global awareness and education. The supervising parents give a big shout-out to the school’s PTA, as well as to Atlanta Public Schools, for the support and funding.
This description from the Odyssey of the Mind Web site gives an idea of competition …
This competition emphasizes creativity and teamwork. It has grown into such a huge event because OotM makes learning fun while giving kids the chance to explore their imaginations and express their creativity.
Millions of kids have been working hard all year perfecting their solutions to OotM problems and competing within their regions and states in order to advance to the 2010 World Finals. However, only the best of the best will make it to WF.
While the competition is fierce, there is also a feeling of camaraderie among competitors. Many students form life-long friendships that span the U.S. and the globe. Teams have the chance to learn about other cultures through a common goal . . . to be as creative as they can!
* NASA will be sure to provide more exciting activities for participants.
* Meeting people from different countries and cultures and making new friends worldwide.
* Seeing OMER and Dr. Sam.
* Having the satisfaction of participating in the highest level of OotM competition.
* Experiencing the other fun-filled events at WF like the Creativity Festival, International Festival, Float and Banner Parade, Coaches Competition, Opening and Awards Ceremonies, and much more!
