Fickett Elementary celebrates Read Across America
R.N. Fickett Elementary celebrated Read Across America with a salute to Dr. Seuss’s literature for the entire week. Students were greeted as they entered Fickett’s foyer last week by the mischievous Cat in the Hat mascot (Gail Broughton), parent volunteer; the lovable pair, Thing One (Mrs. Sweetie) and Thing Two (Mrs. Parks), parent volunteers; as well as a beautifully decorated theme hall, media center, and cafeteria portraying Dr. Seuss ‘s characters and humorous quotes and poems.
During the week, Fickett Principal Dr. Anthony Dorsey observed The Cat in the Hat mascot providing reading, science, and math lessons via the famous story “Green Eggs and Ham,” along with preparing the actual dish to depict the story and relating the story to real life applications.
The theme for this week’s celebration was ”Get Wild About Reading.” On Monday, students kicked off Read Across America with updates provided on WRNF TV News depicting activities for week. On Tuesday, students dressed in red and white or their favorite Dr. Seuss character. A reading rap contest was also held on Tuesday with the winner to be announced on Friday. Thing One and Thing Two passed out treats and a second Cat in The Hat mascot (Lorine McAlpine), parent volunteer was captured on camera reading one of Dr. Seuss’s funniest stories in the media center to a group of enthusiastic students.
Wednesday was mix and match dress day. Students came dressed in their funniest mix and match outfits with the main focus on reading with that hilarious cat. Students also brought their favorite book to read, to swap, and even share with a friend.
On Thursday, the Grinch paid Fickett a visit to share some very important tips on going green. Students learned why recycling is important, what materials should be recycled, and how to conserve energy and resources. During lunch, the Wild About Reading Treasure Wagon delivered a bag of animal cookies to every student. On Friday, all students participated in the Fox in Socks Sock Hop in the gym to culminate Read Across America week and to hear the winner of the Reading Rap contest.
Fickett sends many thanks to parent volunteers: Mrs. Broughton, Ms. Sweetie, Mrs. Parks, Ms. McAlpine, Mrs. Bentson, the students, teachers, office staff, cafeteria staff, custodial staff, administrative staff, and of course Mrs. Dessie Hardwick, Fickett’s literacy coach.
