Each student competed in a round of competition to present and discuss their project in detail. Over 500 first place winners from 16 different recognized regional technology fairs across the state will compete at Macon State College on March 9, 2013 in over 13 different categories. Atlanta Public Schools will be well represented. All first place winners from APS will advance to the State Technology Fair competition.
The Technology Fair Prize Patrol will visit each student to present their award! Every student who participated in the Technology Fair will receive a certificate of participation. A big thank you to our students, teachers and staff for making our 1st Annual Technology Fair a huge success!!
SEED Academy and Fun Lab – Ready, Set, Dissect!
Students at M. Agnes Jones Elementary recently had the opportunity to learn about science through fun and engaging methods as a part of the SEED Academy. The SEED Academy, led by 5th grade teacher and academy administrator, Ms. Veronica Wilson, is an after school program that aligns with Common Core and Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) standards to enhance knowledge in the use of technology and science. The program is designed to increase student proficiency in the use and operation of technology through the integration of reading, science, and math standards.
Ms. Wilson, along with Spelman Bonner Scholars, implemented “Fun Labs” where students participate in fun, but educational projects in a lab setting. During this month’s lab, the students were asked to identify the organs in the fetal pig and compare them to human organs. They were asked the essential question of how pigs and human organs are alike and discussed the different organs that humans have, while also explaining the functions of these organs. Students then predicted what organs they would find in a fetal pig.
Under the supervision of Ms. Wilson, Breagan Ricks and other Spelman volunteers, the students dissected a real fetal pig. The students listened intently to directions to correctly dissect the pig, and they followed the scientific method and recorded their observations. The project was a huge success!
Special thanks to Ms. Wilson and the Bonner Scholars, led by Ms. Breagan Ricks, for another amazing and successful program!
D.H. Stanton Rises as Leaders
On Februrary 1st, D.H. Stanton invited members of the community to an introduction of The Leader in Me initiative, and integrated the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People into a door competition as the first initiation. The special guests and judges for the door contest included APS Board Member Courtney D. English, Georgia State Board Member Kenneth Mason, William Teasley from Peoplestown, D.H. Stanton parents, supporting community members and partners.
D.H. Stanton is the first school in APS to implement The Leader in Me, an innovative, school-wide model that emphasizes a culture of student empowerment that helps to unleash each child’s full potential.
“The Leader in Me program incorporates critical aspects necessary to develop the whole child and propels them towards the future,” says Courtney D. English, APS Board Member, At-Large Seat 7. “I’m looking forward to seeing the outcomes and will be here to support them.”
The Leader in Me applies The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People:
- Be Proactive – You’re in Charge
- Begin with the end in mind – Have a plan
- Put first things first – Work first, then play
- Think win-win – Everyone can win
- Seek first to understand, then to be understood – Listen before you talk
- Synergize – Together is better
- Sharpen the saw – Balance Feels Best
Dr. Clara Taylor, Principal at D.H. Stanton, leads the implementation process in hopes that every student from D.H. Stanton develops their full potential and cultivates habits of leadership.
“One of the habits from today that sticks with me most is habit #5: Seek first to be understand, then to be understood,” says Kenneth Mason, State Board Member for the Fifth Congressional District. “What a powerful lesson for these children here to capture at such a young age, and I’m excited for that habit to become a reality as they grow older.”
