After receiving hundreds of votes and exhibiting stellar athletic ability on the field, the Washington High School bulldogs were recently selected as Fox 5’s High 5 Sports Team of the Week during the month of October.
“We are excited,” said Coach Rodney Hackney. “The entire community is behind us.”
Good Day Atlanta’s Paul Milliken visited Coach Rodney Hackney and the Bulldogs bright and early for a special pep rally.
Fox 5 hosted the morning pep rally at Washington High School and interviewed coaches, students and alumni for the station’s live broadcasts on Good Day Atlanta.
During the pep rally the Bulldogs celebrated and motivated their football team to continue its victorious season. DeMarco Davis, a senior and captain of the football team, encouraged his classmates to attend the game and cheer on the bulldogs.
“This is an amazing group of young men,” DeMarco explained. “We go out and play every week.”
The Washington football team was awarded the team of the week trophy during the pep rally. This moment was especially significant as Mr. Raymond “Tweet” Williams, an alumnus and classmate of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. from the class of 1944, presented the trophy to the team.
“This is a traditional thing for Booker T. Washington High School,” he stated. When I came along segregation was at its most powerful force, and at this time it is an honor for this team to compete in today’s world. I am really happy they have been as successful as they have been.”
