Sutton Middle School joins prestigious national history program

Gilder Lehrman InstituteThe Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History  has welcomed Sutton Middle School into their Affiliate School Program.  The Institute is devoted to improving history education, and has developed an array of programs for schools, teachers and students throughout the nation. Each year the Institute offers support and resources to tens of thousands of teachers, and through them, enhances the education of more than a million students.

The Affiliate School Program acts as a unique gateway to education resources, events, and tools designed to bring American history to life in the classroom. As a Gilder Lehrman Institute Affiliate School, Sutton will receive:

-Free classroom materials three times a year.

-Discounts on all Gilder Lehrman publications including posters, books, and resource boxes.

-Invitations to forums and conferences featuring leading historians.

-Preference in Gilder Lehrman’s highly competitive Summer Seminar Program, which consists of 40 week-long seminars each summer.

-Themed sets of documents and high resolution PDFs from the Gilder Lehrman Collection, an archive of more than 60,000 rare historical manuscripts located in New York City.

-Traveling exhibitions on major historical topics, and

-Opportunities for students to participate in exclusive national history competitions, including the  annual Civil War Essay Contest, with prizes up to $1,000.

Last summer Sutton Media Specialist Judy Marsh participated in the 9/11 and American Memory seminar in New York. The seminar examined the historical causes, background, immediate impact, and the developing legacies of the attacks of September 11, 2001. Ms. Marsh said it was one of the most meaningful academic experiences of her life. The programs are fully funded by the Institute. The full cost of a teacher seminar is $3,250 and the stipend covers airfare, dorm/room, all meals, subway card).  Ms. Marsh is excited that many of Sutton’s teachers are interested in applying for seminars next summer.
