Anytime is a good time for reading; however for Bolton Academy students, they not only get to experience the joys of adventuring through their imagination with great books, they earn a chance to buy books.
The school kicked off their 2nd Annual Read-A-Thon, February 19 to promote reading among its 595 students. For 10 days, students tracked how much time they spent reading. After the 10 days, students then reported their total number of reading minutes; and in, exchange they earned “book bucks” to spend at an upcoming book fair.
Students kicked-off the Read-A-Thon with the popular “Pete the Cat,” children’s book character. They listened to Pete the Cat and his Four Groovy Buttons while they created a Pete the Cat hat and a Pete the Cat snack. At the same time, the kids enjoyed singing along to the very catchy Pete the Cat song, “I Love My White Shoes”.
In addition to the fun literacy activities for students, parents at the Read-A-Thon watched a presentation about the value in reading with their children. They also received information about the importance of reading to children beginning at infancy.
Bolton Academy’s Read-A-Thon ended last Friday. The kiddos are looking forward to spending those “book bucks” at the upcoming Scholastic Book Fair, March 23-30, 2015.
