School Crossing Guards play a critical role in keeping students safe.  At schools throughout Atlanta, crossing guards are often the first face that walking students see at the start of the day and the last face they see before they head home. During the week of January 11 – 15, Atlanta Public Schools will observe its annual School Crossing Guard Recognition Week.

“We are so fortunate to have a committed group of crossing guards in our district,” said APS Director of Security Marquenta S. Hall, Ph.D. “The safety and wellbeing of each of our students is our mission each day. I’m thankful for the valuable service that our crossing guards provide.”

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NTSA), young children and the elderly are the most vulnerable for pedestrian accident related injuries.  In 2012 Georgia ranked fifth in the nation for the number of child-pedestrian fatalities among children 14 and younger.  Skilled crossing guards can reduce the chances of accidents.

“Our crossing guards are a compassionate group of individuals.  These awesome men and women report to work every day, rain, shine, sleet or snow, ready to embrace a child in a special way. For many of these children, the crossing guards serve as positive role models supporting their educational journey. I am honored to serve as their leader,” said Hall.

Throughout recognition week, parents, students, teachers and school administrative staff are showing gratitude to all APS crossing guards through expressions of thanks and handmade cards.

Crossing guards exemplify the APS Department of Safety and Security department motto, “Safety is FIRST with us Every Day, Everywhere.”

Show your appreciation to school crossing guards this week by giving an enthusiastic thanks by tooting your car horn, waving, or simply saying ‘Thanks.’
