Maynard Jackson Girls, Grady Boys Win Annual APS Track and Field Championships

Christian McNair-Jones helped lead Grady claim the boys’ title of the 2017 Atlanta Public Schools Track and Field Championships. He won the 110- and 300-meter hurdle events.

The Maynard Jackson girls and Grady boys track and field teams once again showed their dominance as they took home bragging rights at the annual Atlanta Public Schools Championships, which were completed Tuesday evening at Lakewood Stadium.

Both teams won the city championship for the fourth consecutive year. For the Grady boys, the win was their sixth in the past seven years. Over the past four seasons, the Grey Knights have won two region championships as well. As for the Maynard Jackson girls, they are the two-time Georgia High School Association (GHSA) Class AAA State champs. This season the Jaguars are competing in Class AAAAA.

The top three boys teams were Grady (176 points), Mays (105) and Carver (87). The top three girls teams were Maynard Jackson (187), Mays (119) and South Atlanta (83).

Among the most outstanding performances at the meet, also known as The Atlanta Track Classic, were:

Girls

China Waldorf and Ryah Jackson of Maynard Jackson took first and second place, respectively, in the 300-meter hurdles with times of 45.15 and 45.96 seconds.

Chloe Robinson of Mays won the long jump with a leap of 17-feet, 7 ½ inches.

Soteria Russell of Carver won the shot put with a toss of 37-feet, 7 ½ inches.

Sydni Gilmore of Mays, Jabrea Smith of Maynard Jackson and Mutnodjmet Debnam of Grady placed first, second and third, respectively, in the triple jump with leaps of 37-feet, 10 ½ inches; 36-feet, 9 ½ inches; and 36-feet even.

Boys

Christian McNair-Jones of Grady won the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.27 seconds.

— The Grady 400-meter relay team took first with a time of 41.33 seconds.

Alan Johnson of Mays ran a time of 1-minute, 55.15 seconds in the preliminary round of the 800 meters.

MIDDLE SCHOOL
Bunche Middle School swept the girls and boys titles in the APS Track and Field Championships. The Bunche girls (68 points) edged Inman Middle (65) for the team championship, while the Charger boys (95) won by a comfortable margin over second-place Martin Luther King Middle (75 ½).
